Bon Bons recalls confectionery over undeclared allergens

Bon Bons has recalled chocolates containing undeclared milk and soya. Multiple products and date codes are affected, renewing scrutiny of specifications, artwork approval, allergen verification, and finished product release.

Bon Bons Wholesale has recalled five shaped chocolate products because milk and soya are not declared on their labels, creating a health risk for people with allergies or intolerances to either ingredient.

The affected products are Medium Coloured Ladybird, Small Red Ladybird, Large Red Heart, Mini Butterflies, and Sports Car chocolates. Several best before dates are included, extending from March 2027 to January 2028.

Medium Coloured Ladybird products dated 16 January 2028 and 1 March 2027 are affected, alongside Small Red Ladybird packs dated 21 and 25 January 2027. Large Red Heart products carry best before dates of 22 November, 23 December, and 26 December 2027.

Mini Butterflies dated 9 September and 21 March 2027 are included, as are Sports Car products dated 15 August 2027. Customers with an allergy to milk or soya have been advised not to consume the chocolates and to return them to the retailer.

Bon Bons is recalling the products from customers and has issued point of sale notices explaining the affected lines and return arrangements. The recall applies across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The incident follows other recent labelling failures, including a salsa recall involving undeclared allergens. Different products and supply chains can produce the same failure when the approved recipe, specification, and printed label are no longer aligned.

Confectionery may move through manufacturers, importers, decorators, wholesalers, repackers, and brand owners before reaching the final retailer. Product data can pass between several systems and organisations, increasing the opportunity for an outdated specification, incorrect language version, or similar looking artwork to be selected.

Long shelf lives extend the reach of an error because affected stock can remain in warehouses or shops for many months. Products may also have been divided into seasonal assortments, gift packs, or mixed displays, making recovery dependent on accurate batch and customer records rather than a withdrawal from one central location.

Artwork approval needs to compare ingredient declarations, emphasised allergens, precautionary statements, legal product names, and translations against the current authorised specification. Recipe and supplier changes should trigger a formal review, although errors can also arise when an obsolete label is accidentally returned to production.

Line clearance provides another control point, particularly where several visually similar packs are produced in succession. Unused labels and packaging need to be removed before the next run, while the first completed packs should be checked against the scheduled product and retained as evidence of the release decision.

Vision systems can verify label presence, barcodes, date codes, artwork references, and positioning, but they depend on correct master data. A camera will approve an incorrect label if the system has been instructed to expect it, leaving specification governance as the foundation of automated inspection.

The affected products have clearly defined date codes, but their long shelf lives and broad retail distribution increase the work required to locate them. The recall demonstrates how a relatively small artwork error can create a prolonged retrieval exercise and a potentially serious health risk long after the original production run has finished.
