IN Brief:

  • KluraLabs raised £8m to scale its packaging technology.
  • The company says the materials inhibit mould and harmful bacteria.
  • A UK retail trial was launched in January, according to an investor.

UK materials science company KluraLabs has raised £8 million to accelerate commercial rollout of its packaging technology, aimed at slowing spoilage and extending shelf life. The company describes its approach as upgrading conventional packaging materials to act as a barrier against bacteria and mould.

KluraLabs says its materials bring antimicrobial and preservation capabilities into everyday packaging formats, with the goal of reducing spoilage without compromising sustainability or food quality. On its website, the company describes its technology as transforming food packaging into “an active defense against bacteria and mould,” and says it is designed to keep food fresher for longer while reducing the need for preservatives.

Dr Matin Mohseni, KluraLabs co-founder and COO, said: “We’re delighted to secure this significant round of funding to take our technology to the next stage of commercial scale-up.” Mohseni added that the funding supports scale-up and commercial deployment, describing it as validation of investor confidence in the company’s scientific approach.

Investor Triple B said it participated in KluraLabs’ funding round and described the business as a Cambridge-based technology company working on materials that “prohibit the growth of mould and harmful bacteria.” Triple B also said KluraLabs launched a product trial with a leading UK retailer in January, positioning the trial as a step towards consumer-facing deployment. Thomas Archer Bata, partner at Triple B, said: “Klura Labs represents the type of entrepreneur-led innovation we believe in.”

Triple B also said Jesper Lok, chair of Triple B’s board, will serve as chair of Klura Labs. The investor framed the appointment as support for operational scaling and international expansion.

KluraLabs was founded in 2020 by Dr Matin Mohseni and Dr Reza Saberi Moghaddam. The company has positioned its next phase around scaling manufacturing and commercial integration across retail supply chains, where shelf-life extension can be delivered through packaging formats that fit current packing lines and distribution networks.

The company has not disclosed a detailed list of investors alongside the round in public statements, but has said the proceeds will be used to accelerate rollout and widen commercial deployment.
