SCGP broadens Cook partnership across packaging operations

SCGP and Cook are extending packaging cooperation across their operations. The agreement links packaging development, inventory management, EV transport, and recovered-paper collection as the partners widen an established supplier relationship into resource management.

SCG Packaging and Cook vegetable oil manufacturer Thanakorn Vegetable Oil Products are extending an established packaging relationship into inventory management, electric-vehicle transport, and systematic recovery of used paper.

The Thai companies have signed a Memorandum of Sustainability and Efficiency Improvement covering resource management across a broader portion of Thanakorn’s operations. The agreement builds on several years of cooperation in packaging development between SCGP and the Poonphol Group business.

Thanakorn manufactures Cook vegetable oil and operates in oilseed processing, creating continuing flows of packaging into production and finished goods out through distribution. Under the expanded arrangement, packaging specification will sit alongside measures intended to manage stock, transport, and material recovery more closely.

SCGP says the companies will continue developing packaging solutions while managing inventory with the aim of improving resource efficiency. The agreement also includes transportation using electric trucks and the establishment of points where used paper can be received, sorted, and collected.

Recovered paper from Thanakorn can then be returned to SCGP’s recycling and upcycling processes. That introduces a defined reverse flow alongside the conventional movement of new packaging into the food producer’s operation.

The arrangement broadens the role of the packaging supplier beyond manufacture and delivery. Packaging availability is closely tied to production schedules, warehouse capacity, handling, and transport, meaning an apparently simple change in stock policy can affect both operating continuity and the amount of material held on site.

Excess packaging inventory occupies space and ties up working capital, while insufficient stock can interrupt filling or packing even where the underlying food process remains available. Coordinating inventory with packaging supply therefore has an operational function independent of the environmental claims attached to the wider agreement.

Transport adds another variable. SCGP and Thanakorn are incorporating electric trucks into the logistics system, although neither company has published quantified emissions reductions or a timetable for converting the complete transport operation.

The absence of those figures limits any assessment of the environmental impact at this stage. What is confirmed is that EV transport has been incorporated into the partnership rather than treated as a separate logistics project.

The recovered-paper element has a similar dependence on execution. Paper packaging may be technically recyclable, but its industrial value after use depends on segregation, collection, contamination levels, and a route into a recycling system capable of processing it.

Dedicated collection points give the material a defined path once it has been used at the food producer’s operation. SCGP says paper packaging and other used paper collected from Thanakorn will return to its recycling and upcycling processes for further use.

Connecting those stages creates a more deliberate material loop than a conventional supply arrangement in which packaging leaves the supplier’s control once delivered. The effectiveness of the system will depend on recovery volumes, material condition, collection frequency, and the amount that can ultimately return to useful production.

Packaging development remains the first point in that cycle. Material choices, dimensions, strength, print requirements, and compatibility with the customer’s packing operation determine the resources entering the system before inventory, transport, or recycling decisions are made.

For a high-volume oilseed processor, repeated packaging flows mean modest changes can accumulate across a year’s production. Reducing unnecessary material, improving load utilisation, or recovering a higher proportion of paper can produce meaningful totals when the same activity is repeated at industrial scale, although SCGP has not published measured savings for the Cook programme.

The agreement is therefore more useful as an operating model than as evidence of a quantified environmental result. It joins four activities — packaging development, stock management, transport, and recovery — that are frequently managed through separate commercial or departmental arrangements.

Thanakorn says its wider objective is to improve resource use from raw-material and packaging selection through management, transport, and handling after use. SCGP, meanwhile, is extending customer relationships towards circular-economy services in addition to supplying packaging products.

The partnership follows other SCGP initiatives that combine packaging design with recovered-material management, suggesting the group is attempting to make resource handling part of its customer proposition rather than limiting involvement to the initial packaging sale.

Commercial performance will still be determined by familiar production requirements. Packaging has to arrive when required, perform consistently on the line, protect the product through distribution, and avoid creating additional handling or storage problems. Recycling or transport measures that undermine those functions would simply move cost elsewhere in the operation.

No material-saving percentage, logistics cost reduction, recovered-paper volume, or emissions figure has yet been disclosed for the expanded Cook programme. Those measurements will determine whether the combined model delivers more than procedural integration once it has operated for a sufficient period.

The agreement nevertheless creates a framework in which the packaging entering Thanakorn’s production operation and the paper leaving it can be considered within the same commercial relationship. Its next useful evidence will be the operating data showing whether that broader control translates into lower resource consumption, reduced waste, or more efficient logistics.
