Südpack rolls out films for fresh fish packs

Südpack has launched new films for vacuum and MAP fish. The SKINPro system and Multifol Extreme thermoforming films target shelf-life extension, seal integrity, and downgauging for seafood packs.

Südpack has launched two packaging film families aimed at fish and seafood applications, combining vacuum skin packaging and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) use-cases with an emphasis on seal integrity, puncture resistance, and material reduction.

The SKINPro system is a vacuum skin packaging format designed around matched top and bottom webs. The top web is engineered to conform closely to the product, including packs with protrusions, sharp contours, and undercuts, while the system removes oxygen from the pack to support shelf-life extension. Südpack has also framed seal reliability under real line conditions as a core design requirement, including performance where seal areas may be contaminated during packing.

In product descriptions provided by the company, SKINPro is intended to support stable presentation formats — including flat, upright, and hanging displays — while reducing fluid movement within the pack. Südpack has described the top web as wrinkle-free with enhanced transparency and gloss for high product visibility, alongside “clean” opening behaviour.

For bottom webs, Südpack has described a portfolio based on PE, PP, and amorphous PET (APET), with mono-material variants included to align with recyclability requirements. The company has also stated that the materials are designed for reliable processing on skin packaging machines.

Alongside SKINPro, Südpack has promoted Multifol Extreme as a coextruded, thermoformable film family used as bottom webs in MAP and vacuum packs. The company describes the range as built around high puncture resistance and sealing performance, including in the presence of oil or fat, with suitability claimed for greasy, protein-rich, sharp-edged, and frozen applications.

In its seafood-focused release, Südpack states that Multifol Extreme is around 30% lighter than conventional PA/PE structures, and that a 150 µm Multifol Extreme film can replace a conventional 200 µm thermoforming film without “compromises on product protection.” The company also cites thermoforming performance for deep draws and compatibility with standard thermoforming packaging machines. On its product page, Südpack additionally describes the films as “up to 25% thinner than other film solutions,” and lists deep-freeze suitability among the features.

Südpack summed up its design intent as balancing protection and material use: “Whatever the format, it must deliver a secure seal even if the seal area is contaminated, resist punctures from heavy or sharp-edged products, and help extend shelf life with an integrated barrier function — ideally while using as little material as possible.”
