Botticelli Foods has recalled one lot of Bettergoods pistachio nut butter after routine retail sampling detected Salmonella in three jars sold through Walmart in Florida.
The affected product was manufactured by Gustibus Alimentari in Assoro, Italy, imported into the United States by Botticelli Foods, and distributed exclusively through Walmart. The recall covers 6.7oz glass jars carrying UPC 194346207961, lot code LB028ACP04, and an expiry date of 28 January 2027.
Distribution reached Walmart stores in 19 states, including Florida, Georgia, Colorado, Oregon, Tennessee, and Washington. No other lots are included, and no illnesses or injuries had been reported when the company announcement was published by the US Food and Drug Administration on 3 August.
Walmart learned of the positive results on 17 July after the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services tested three jars during a routine inspection. Consumers have been told not to eat the affected product and to return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
Testing exposed a cross-border control point
The recall is limited to one lot, but its route from an Italian manufacturer to a US importer, a national retailer, and stores across 19 states shows the amount of information required to contain even a narrow incident. Manufacturer identity, importer records, retailer distribution data, package coding, and shelf-life information all had to align before the affected stock could be identified precisely.
That precision is particularly important for shelf-stable spreads. A long expiry date can leave product in retail inventories and consumers’ cupboards well after manufacture and distribution, while the product is normally eaten without a further cooking step that could reduce microbiological risk.
Salmonella has been associated with nuts, nut butters, chocolate, meat, eggs, produce, and dairy products. Low moisture does not make a ready-to-eat product automatically free from the organism: US guidance notes that Salmonella can persist in dry processing environments and may become more heat resistant in foods with low water activity.
Control therefore extends beyond a single heat treatment stage. Raw material approval, validated lethality processes, separation between treated and untreated material, dry cleaning practices, equipment design, environmental monitoring, and prevention of post-process contamination all contribute to finished product assurance.
US guidance for low-moisture ready-to-eat foods also places emphasis on sanitation programmes and corrective action after pathogen contamination. Nut and seed spreads are difficult products to manage casually because fats and fine particulates can accumulate in equipment, while introducing water into a nominally dry environment may create additional opportunities for microbial persistence if cleaning is poorly controlled.
Lot discipline limits the commercial damage
The Bettergoods action demonstrates the value of granular lot coding. Only LB028ACP04 is included, allowing the importer and retailer to separate affected jars from other production rather than withdrawing every pistachio spread under the brand. Smaller, well-defined traceability lots can reduce the amount of product captured by a recall, provided records remain complete through manufacturing, import, distribution, and retail receipt.
A code is useful only when it survives the full route to market. It must be legible on the pack, recorded against shipment and customer data, and accessible quickly enough to support store instructions and consumer communication. The 19-state distribution list shows why recall readiness must be established before a positive result is received; reconstructing movements after the event is slower and more prone to gaps.
The incident also separates routine sampling from outbreak investigation. Three retail jars tested positive, but no illnesses had been linked to the lot at the time of the notice. Detection of Salmonella in a ready-to-eat product is sufficient to create a potential health risk and trigger withdrawal before epidemiological evidence develops.
Attention now turns upstream. The public notice does not establish whether contamination originated in pistachios, another ingredient, the Assoro production environment, or a later handling stage. The manufacturer and importer will need to review ingredient lots, process controls, retained samples, sanitation records, and distribution data rather than assuming that removal of retail stock closes the event.
The recall’s limited scope shows that the product can be isolated; it does not prove that the contamination route has been resolved. The decisive work begins after the jars leave shelves: locating the source, testing corrective action, and demonstrating that subsequent production can return to market without repeating the failure.
