Altopack has introduced a resealable flexible pack for spaghetti, placing a transverse zip across the top of the pouch so the remaining pasta can be closed after the original seal is broken.
The Italian packaging machinery manufacturer said the format develops the conventional pillow bag by adding a repeatable opening and closing system. A leading producer in West Asia has adopted the design, providing an initial commercial application without disclosing the customer, line configuration, or production volume.
Long-cut pasta creates a particular packaging constraint because the product is rigid, elongated, and prone to breakage. The film, seal area, closure, filling path, and downstream handling equipment must accommodate that geometry without damaging the pasta or allowing the zip to interfere with pack formation.
Altopack positions the transverse closure as an evolution of self-adhesive easy-open packaging. The consumer can dispense part of the contents and reseal the pouch, limiting exposure to moisture and external contamination while avoiding a separate clip or storage container.
The design addresses a familiar weakness in standard pasta packaging. Pillow bags are inexpensive, lightweight, and efficient to run, but they provide little protection after opening unless the user folds, clips, or decants the pack.
Adding a zip changes the production equation. The closure must feed consistently, align with the film, seal without damaging the pack, and retain performance through filling, transport, shelf life, and repeated use. A convenient format has limited value when it reduces output, raises reject rates, or creates another failure point.
Dry pasta is relatively shelf stable, so the strongest commercial case is convenience and protection rather than the avoidance of rapid spoilage. The balance may differ in hot or humid markets, where moisture ingress and contamination can become more significant during extended storage after opening.
Smaller households and fragmented eating occasions also favour packs that remain usable over several meals. Producers have answered that demand through portion formats, cartons, rigid containers, labels, and clips, each carrying different costs and implications for filling equipment, transport, and waste.
A resealable flexible pouch attempts to preserve the material and logistics advantages of film while improving the opened pack. Whether it succeeds depends on the complete specification, including the zip material, film structure, printing, barrier properties, seal behaviour, and compatibility with local recycling systems.
The environmental balance is not automatic. A closure adds material and can complicate recycling, but better protection may prevent product loss and remove the need for a secondary container. The result depends on material quantities, recovery routes, and the number of occasions on which the reseal function is actually used.
Altopack has designed and manufactured automatic packaging machinery since 1999 and lists long pasta among its established product sectors. Its portfolio includes pillow bags, label open-close formats, square-bottom bags, case packing, weighing, and complete packaging lines.
The company’s long-pasta work also includes the AOD Ultra platform and double square-bottom formats that can stand upright or lie horizontally. Altopack has promoted ultrasonic sealing on established machinery as a route to lower film and energy consumption, although it has not confirmed that the new zip application uses the same sealing configuration.
That distinction prevents separate technologies from being bundled into one performance claim. Resealability, lower material use, high line speed, and recyclability can support one another, but they can also conflict when the closure requires extra components or narrower film tolerances.
Plant trials will need to measure throughput, seal integrity, reject rates, changeover time, cleaning, maintenance, and the effect of pasta dust or broken fragments on closure performance. Repeated opening tests are also necessary because a zip that works at first use may lose alignment or grip after the pack has been handled several times.
Film sourcing is another constraint. A commercial pack must balance barrier performance, machinability, closure attachment, print quality, stiffness, and recovery options without creating a structure that is difficult to process in the markets where it is sold.
Commercial adoption will also depend on how easily the closure can be integrated with downstream case packing and retail presentation. A pack that seals correctly but behaves poorly in collating, cartoning, palletisation, or shelf handling can shift the problem beyond the primary packaging machine.
Altopack has not disclosed the capacity of the adopted application, whether existing machinery can be retrofitted, or when the format will become available to a wider customer base. Those details will determine whether the transverse zip remains a premium option or develops into a repeatable specification for mainstream pasta lines.
