Walkers recalls sharing box over undeclared wheat

Walkers has recalled snack assortments with incorrect outer allergen labelling. One 655g sharing-box batch includes Monster Munch Giants Roast Beef containing wheat, although the individual bags identify the allergen correctly.

IN Brief:

  • PepsiCo is recalling the 655g Walkers Variety Snacks Sharing Box, batch 107543, with a best-before date of 21 November 2026.
  • Wheat is declared on the enclosed Monster Munch Giants Roast Beef bag but omitted from the retail sharing box, creating an allergen labelling risk.
  • The FSA alert applies to England, Scotland, and Wales; Allergy UK incorporating Anaphylaxis UK identifies Iceland as the retailer.

PepsiCo is recalling a Walkers Variety Snacks Sharing Box after the outer carton failed to declare wheat contained in one of the enclosed snack packs. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued an allergy alert on 30 October 2026 for a 655g six-pack assortment with batch code 107543 and a best-before date of 21 November 2026. The alert covers England, Scotland, and Wales.

The affected box includes an 85g pack of Monster Munch Giants Roast Beef, which contains wheat as a source of gluten. Its individual bag carries the correct ingredient and allergen information. The omission occurs on the sharing box surrounding the assortment, which may be the only label a shopper reads before buying the product. The FSA warns that the undeclared wheat creates a risk for people with a wheat or gluten allergy or intolerance, or with coeliac disease.

Allergy UK incorporating Anaphylaxis UK identifies Iceland stores as the retailer of the affected sharing boxes and confirms that no other Walkers or PepsiCo products are included in the alert. That includes Monster Munch Giants Roast Beef bags sold separately. The distinction confines the problem to information on the combined retail pack rather than the declared composition of the individual snack product.

PepsiCo has issued a point-of-sale notice and is recalling the identified boxes from customers. People who have purchased the specified batch and need to avoid wheat or gluten have been advised not to eat the product. They can contact the Walkers consumer care service on 0800 274777 or through the company’s online contact service for a refund. Retail notices and batch identifiers allow customers and stores to distinguish affected cartons from other assortments.

UK allergen labelling guidance requires products sold as multipacks to display allergen information on the outer packaging. Where the individual items also carry ingredient and allergen declarations, those must be consistent with the information on the outside. A correctly labelled snack bag cannot compensate for wheat being absent from the carton used to sell the complete assortment. Consumers need accurate information before they open the retail pack.

Multi-item packaging brings together two sets of production data: the formulations and labels of individual products, and the composition of the finished assortment. If a carton contains several flavours, its allergen declaration has to reflect all included products. The same requirement applies when components are packed at different times or transferred between manufacturing and assembly operations. The point at which bags become one retail unit is therefore a separate labelling-control step.

Accurate outer artwork depends on a verified list of which finished products are packed into each assortment. Ingredient records for those products provide the allergen information, while packing specifications define the permitted mix and carton description. Changes to a recipe, component, or promotional assortment can require a fresh comparison between those records and the retail pack. The FSA alert identifies the missing outer declaration but does not attribute the error to any particular change in formulation, artwork, or assembly.

Packaging and line verification perform complementary tasks. Approved artwork establishes what should be printed on the outer carton, while checks at assembly can establish whether the correct components and carton have been brought together. Batch coding then links the finished product to the relevant specification and provides a practical route for tracing stock when an error emerges. Together, the controls are intended to preserve accurate information as individually labelled products become a combined retail unit.

The FSA’s recall reference is FSA-AA-50-2026. It specifies the 655g box size, six enclosed packs, batch number 107543 and 21 November best-before date, allowing a targeted recall. The warning identifies an allergen labelling error affecting the outer carton. The customer risk arises when the allergen in an enclosed food is absent from the information available on the retail unit.

Allergen declarations are particularly important when assortments contain products with different recipes. A buyer may recognise a familiar brand or pack presentation while a single flavour introduces an ingredient that is absent from the others. The legal requirement for consistent information across packaging levels addresses that possibility directly. In the Walkers case, the individual product remains correctly identified while the carton requires action.

The recall remains defined by the published identifiers and the advice to affected customers. PepsiCo’s contact and refund arrangements apply to the specified sharing box, while the charity’s notice confirms that bags of the same Monster Munch flavour sold separately have their own correct declarations. The incident centres on the integrity of information transferred from component products to the finished retail assortment.
