IN Brief:
- Innovia’s P2G targets flow wrap fresh produce applications, including pre-prepared vegetables.
- High gas transmission, dual-side sealing, and mono-material PP recyclability sit at the core of the design.
- Produce packaging development is moving toward films that balance shelf life with forthcoming recyclability rules.
Innovia Films has launched a new high gas transmission BOPP film for fresh produce, targeting one of flexible packaging’s more difficult technical balances: keeping products alive enough to breathe, while still delivering seal integrity, shelf appeal, and recyclability. The new P2G grade is intended for flow wrap applications including whole and pre-prepared vegetables.
The film has been engineered to support respiration control through adjusted gas transmission rates, which Innovia says helps extend freshness and shelf life. At the same time, it is designed with dual-side heat sealability, strong optical clarity, and retained puncture and impact resistance at low temperatures, features aimed at real distribution conditions rather than just pack-line performance.
P2G is also a mono-material polypropylene structure, allowing it to enter the PP waste stream where collection and recycling systems exist. Innovia says the film can also incorporate chemically recycled and bio-sourced ISCC-certified polymers via mass balance, giving brand owners another route to recycled content targets without moving away from BOPP processing characteristics.
EU packaging rules are moving recyclability from a preferred attribute to a regulatory requirement, and fresh produce remains a category where shelf-life loss can quickly cancel out any material-level sustainability gain. That leaves film developers working a narrow technical margin between respiration management, pack toughness, machinability, and circularity.
Innovia is betting that fresh produce packers will increasingly want all four in a single substrate. The direction of travel is clear enough: specialist films now have to do more than protect the product; they have to fit the waste system as well.
