MM Packaging has introduced automated sheet-mixing capability at selected UK and German plants, allowing as many as eight artwork variants to be collated during one high-speed carton production run.

The system is designed for promotional, seasonal, and event-led programmes in which several carton designs must appear together inside one shelf-ready case or retail display. Rather than manufacturing each design separately and combining finished cartons by hand, the collator integrates the required mix during production.

Major sporting events, entertainment releases, Christmas campaigns, and retail promotions often require multiple designs to reach stores together on a fixed date. Automated collation removes a labour-intensive stage from those compressed schedules and gives converters tighter control over the number and sequence of variants entering each display.

Up to eight designs can be combined while retaining the speed and consistency expected from a commercial carton line. Conventional print treatments, spot ultraviolet gloss, hot foil, embossing, and debossing remain available, allowing mixed packs to use the same decorative finishes as standard promotional cartons.

Greater artwork variety creates a production problem that extends beyond printing. Individual designs may use the same board grade, dimensions, and food product, yet the requirement to deliver the correct combination in every case adds counting, handling, verification, and reconciliation after conversion.

Manual collation absorbs labour and floor space while exposing finished cartons to damage, incorrect ratios, and missing designs. Those failures rarely affect the food directly, but they can cause retailer rejection, promotional under-delivery, rework, and packaging waste after most of the carton’s cost has already been incurred.

By controlling the mix mechanically, the converter can reduce dependence on temporary labour and improve repeatability across larger campaigns. The equipment also offers greater flexibility to brands that previously avoided multiple designs because the fulfilment cost outweighed the promotional value.

Production planning remains complex, since artwork variants still require individual approval and may need separate upstream print runs. The collator reduces the final mixing burden, but artwork, plates or digital files, board supply, finishing, and finished-stock controls must all be aligned before the mixed display can be produced.

Mandatory copy creates another layer of risk. Every design needs correct allergen, nutrition, recycling, legal-name, date-code, and market information, even when the promotional image is the only intended change. An incorrect regulated panel on one variant can compromise a full mixed batch that otherwise meets the brief.

Food packing lines are being redesigned around similar increases in format and campaign complexity. Robotic collating and palletising systems are taking over more downstream handling, while MM Packaging is applying automation earlier in the chain, before cartons reach the filler.

Those systems must share reliable product and artwork data. A mixed-artwork carton still has to be erected, filled, closed, inspected, case-packed, and palletised without losing campaign identity. Barcodes, print verification, case labels, and warehouse records need to recognise when visual differences belong to one stock-keeping unit rather than separate products.

Promotional demand also creates forecasting pressure because sales can peak around an event and fall immediately afterwards. Excess cartons cannot always be reused once dates, teams, films, or seasonal graphics have passed. Faster collation can shorten lead times, although it cannot compensate for an oversized order or weak campaign forecasting.

Digital printing has made short artwork runs more accessible, whereas conventional processes remain economical at higher volumes. Automated collation can support either route by managing the physical mixture after print, provided tolerances, stack quality, and finishing remain consistent across the designs.

Regional capability in the UK and Germany gives MM Packaging more than one production base for European campaigns. Customers will still need to match orders with the relevant site’s board, print, finishing, and certification capabilities, particularly when one promotion covers several languages or national recycling requirements.

Material efficiency will remain part of the specification as fibre packaging faces tighter scrutiny over weight and recyclability. Decorative treatments cannot compromise board recovery, and a mixed-design campaign should not create excessive make-ready waste or redundant stock merely to increase shelf impact.

The investment makes artwork variety a controlled manufacturing parameter rather than a manual exception. Its commercial value will rest on repeatability: eight designs must arrive in the intended balance, at line speed, without transferring the labour burden into inspection, warehousing, or customer reconciliation.
