Polytag has extended its Ecotrace packaging detection programme to N+P’s Crayford Materials Recovery Facility, taking the network to 14 UK sites and adding a major London-area recycling operation to its tracking infrastructure.
Crayford processes more than 450,000 tonnes of mixed recycling each year and serves more than two million households across Greater London and southern England, according to information released alongside the Ecotrace expansion. The site’s scale gives the latest installation more weight than simply increasing the network count by one.
Ecotrace combines invisible ultraviolet identifiers applied to plastic packaging with detection equipment installed at participating materials recovery facilities. When a marked pack passes a detector, the system records data connected to its barcode identity, giving participating businesses evidence that the packaging has appeared within a monitored recycling stream.
The method is intended to add physical detection data to the broader information already available through packaging sales, collection statistics, and waste reporting. Those conventional datasets can show how much material entered the market or how much waste a facility processed, but they do not necessarily connect a particular packaging specification with an observed recovery event.
Polytag’s identifiers are designed to be incorporated into packaging or label production rather than relying on consumers to scan a code after use. Detection takes place downstream when marked items pass equipment installed at recovery facilities, allowing the packaging itself to carry the link between production data and a later waste-management event.
The technology has already been used in food and beverage packaging. Aldi and Arla have deployed UV identifiers on milk bottle labels produced for selected products, allowing marked packs to be recorded when they reach equipped recovery facilities.
Crayford extends that physical detection footprint. Brands and retailers associated with the programme include Waitrose, Ocado, and Kraft Heinz, giving the system direct relevance to food and FMCG packaging as the number of monitored sites increases.
Network coverage remains an important limitation when interpreting the results. A pack that is not detected cannot automatically be classified as unrecycled because it may have entered a facility without a detector, followed a different waste route, or left the monitored stream before reaching installed equipment.
Ecotrace therefore records observed events inside its own infrastructure rather than generating a complete national recycling rate for an individual package. The value of the data rises as more large facilities are equipped because a greater proportion of marked packaging has the opportunity to pass a detector.
Crayford’s own operating scale strengthens that effect. N+P has been expanding the site’s processing capability, and the facility handles substantial volumes of mixed household recycling from one of the UK’s largest population centres. A detector positioned inside that flow can produce considerably more observations than equipment at a small local operation.
Food and drink manufacturers increasingly have reasons to seek more detailed packaging data. Extended producer responsibility is shifting more of the cost of packaging waste towards producers, while recyclability assessments, packaging design choices, and material specifications are becoming more closely linked with compliance and cost.
Detection data does not replace those statutory reporting systems, but it can provide another layer of operational evidence. Packaging teams can potentially compare whether different formats are being observed in monitored recovery infrastructure, examine geographical patterns, and assess the effect of packaging changes against physical detection records.
The process also adds another technical requirement to the packaging chain. An identifier has to survive printing or labelling, filling, distribution, consumer use, collection, and sorting while remaining detectable at the recovery facility. Its usefulness depends on the link between the physical tag, the product identity, and the data platform remaining intact throughout that route.
With Crayford added, Ecotrace has moved further beyond a small pilot network. The industrial test is now less about whether ultraviolet identifiers can be detected and more about whether a sufficiently large network can produce repeatable data that packaging manufacturers, food companies, retailers, recyclers, and compliance teams can use alongside established waste reporting.
