California Natural Color has broken ground on an expansion of its headquarters and primary manufacturing facility in Fresno, with the ingredient supplier expecting the additional space to increase existing production capacity by 300% for natural colours and grape seed extract.

The company has not disclosed the value of the investment, the additional floor area, a completion date, or the detailed equipment package. Its stated capacity increase nevertheless represents a substantial enlargement of a site supplying colour and grape-derived ingredients into food, beverage, nutraceutical, and other formulation markets.

California Natural Color said the development is intended to meet higher demand as manufacturers and retailers move away from synthetic food dyes. The expansion will increase production capability across its naturally derived colour portfolio, grape seed extract, and its crystal-format colour technology.

Fresno already serves as the company’s headquarters and principal production location. California state workplace records describe the operation as supplying fruit and vegetable concentrates, natural colours, and grape seed extract to food, beverage, and nutraceutical customers, providing a manufacturing base that combines agricultural raw materials with ingredient extraction and processing.

The timing reflects a broader reformulation cycle in the US. Regulatory initiatives and voluntary retailer or manufacturer commitments are increasing scrutiny of certified synthetic colours, creating demand for alternatives that can provide comparable visual performance while meeting the processing conditions of established products.

That change is technically more complicated than exchanging one colour additive for another. Naturally derived pigments can respond differently to heat, oxygen, light, pH, water activity, storage time, and interactions with other ingredients, meaning reformulation work often extends beyond the pigment itself.

Capacity must be matched by application support

A natural colour that performs well in a cold beverage may not behave identically in bakery, confectionery, dairy, extruded snacks, or products exposed to extended shelf life. Manufacturers therefore need suppliers to provide both sufficient physical ingredient volume and application data showing how the colour behaves during real processing and storage conditions.

California Natural Color promotes technical and R&D support as part of its offer, an increasingly important capability as customers move multiple products through reformulation programmes at the same time. Large portfolio changes can generate several parallel trials covering shade matching, stability, dosage, process tolerance, packaging interaction, and final shelf-life assessment.

Scaling ingredient manufacture by 300% should give the company greater headroom if those development programmes turn into commercial orders. It also increases the importance of production consistency because colour variations that appear modest at ingredient level can become visible across millions of finished consumer packs.

Natural colours require control of incoming agricultural materials as well as the subsequent extraction and concentration processes. Pigment strength can vary with crop variety, growing conditions, harvest timing, and storage, leaving processors to standardise the resulting ingredient sufficiently for customers to maintain consistent product appearance.

The Fresno expansion also covers grape seed extract, giving the site a second ingredient stream alongside colour production. California Natural Color markets grape-derived ingredients in addition to colours sourced from materials including grape, beet, carrot, and radish, allowing parts of its agricultural sourcing and processing capability to serve several product categories.

That broader portfolio can improve utilisation of manufacturing infrastructure, but it also increases changeover and quality-control requirements. Different extracts and colour products may need separate storage, cleaning procedures, concentration conditions, analytical testing, and packaging formats before release to customers.

The company’s crystal colour format adds another manufacturing consideration. Dry or crystalline ingredients can offer storage and handling advantages over some liquid alternatives, although the supplier still has to demonstrate solubility, colour strength, and stability for individual applications. Increasing crystal-product capacity therefore requires both processing equipment and quality systems capable of maintaining those characteristics consistently.

US regulatory changes are likely to keep reformulation activity elevated. The Food and Drug Administration has been encouraging movement towards colours derived from natural sources while continuing to regulate colour additives for their authorised uses and required specifications. Individual food companies and retailers are also setting their own timelines, which can bring commercial change ahead of statutory deadlines.

For ingredient suppliers, that creates a capacity-planning problem. Customers may announce colour-removal programmes years in advance, but replacement ingredients have to be available early enough for development trials, procurement qualification, factory tests, packaging validation, and full-scale conversion. Waiting until the final reformulation deadline to expand production would leave little margin for that qualification cycle.

California Natural Color has not yet disclosed when the additional Fresno capacity will enter service, so the timing of the physical increase cannot be matched precisely against customer reformulation programmes. The 300% figure does, however, indicate that management expects demand to require more than incremental debottlenecking of the existing operation.

The next meaningful project milestones will be completion timing, the equipment installed, and the rate at which new capacity is commissioned. Until those details are released, the industrial significance lies in the size of the planned expansion: the shift in food-colour formulation is now driving a substantial increase in upstream ingredient manufacturing rather than remaining solely an R&D exercise.
