Kellanova has ended cereal production at its Trafford Park factory in Greater Manchester after 88 years, completing the principal manufacturing step in a closure programme first announced in 2024.
Around 360 jobs are affected and cereal production is being transferred to the company’s Wrexham operation in North Wales. The Trafford Park site was one of Europe’s largest cereal factories when it opened in 1938, but its age and physical layout eventually became central to Kellanova’s decision to withdraw manufacturing.
The September development is therefore not a new closure announcement. Kellanova had already completed consultation over the future of the factory and confirmed the transfer of cereal production; the fresh operational milestone is that saleable cereal is no longer being produced there.
The company’s original case for closure was unusually specific about factory design. Trafford Park spreads production across six floors, with food and materials moving vertically through a building configured around manufacturing practices from the 1930s.
Kellanova said that arrangement no longer reflected how it would design a cereal plant using contemporary industrial technology. It also said only around half of the building was being used and that the investment required to maintain the site over the coming years was no longer commercially viable.
Those constraints illustrate a familiar problem in long-lived food factories. Process equipment can be replaced many times over the life of a building, but the structure around it does not necessarily evolve at the same pace.
Modern high-throughput food plants are generally organised to simplify product flow, machinery access, utilities, conveying and maintenance. Automation can make those requirements more pronounced because machines, controls and material-handling systems perform best when the overall line has been planned as one process rather than fitted around an inherited structure.
Cereal manufacture involves several stages that have to work continuously together. Ingredients are received and stored before processing, cooking, drying or toasting; product may then pass through coating and cooling stages before moving into high-speed packing.
Moving those operations between multiple floors can increase conveying requirements and complicate access for cleaning, maintenance and equipment replacement. A layout that was practical when labour and machinery were organised differently can therefore become progressively harder to adapt as throughput and automation expectations rise.
Factory utilisation added another constraint. Kellanova’s estimate that only half the Trafford Park space was in use meant further capital would have been committed to maintaining a large property without necessarily creating an equivalent increase in productive capacity.
That equation becomes particularly difficult when another site can absorb the manufacturing requirement. Moving output to Wrexham allows the company to retain UK cereal production while consolidating activity into a continuing manufacturing base rather than rebuilding large parts of an ageing Manchester plant.
Kellanova’s other UK operations remain separate from the Trafford decision. Its MediaCity site in Salford continues as its UK headquarters and European technology hub, while the company’s Wrexham manufacturing operations and St Helens distribution centre were not included in the original closure proposal.
Greater Manchester therefore remains part of the company’s UK organisation even though Trafford Park has stopped making cereal. The industrial consequence is narrower but substantial: a site that produced breakfast cereals for generations is moving from production into closure and decommissioning activity.
The plant’s history gives the decision unusual visibility, but longevity does not protect a factory from normal asset economics. Food manufacturers still have to compare maintenance, labour, energy, reliability, yield and future upgrade costs against the performance available from alternative production capacity.
Legacy buildings can remain competitive where their structure is flexible enough to accommodate new lines. Where that flexibility disappears, each generation of equipment can require more compromise, temporary engineering or supporting work around the main process.
The cost of those compromises is not confined to capital expenditure. Difficult machinery access can extend maintenance time, additional conveying can increase energy and mechanical complexity, and awkward layouts can limit future changes to packaging formats or production flow.
That is why the Trafford Park closure is better understood as an asset decision than as evidence of retreat from the cereal market. Kellanova is continuing UK production but has decided that the Manchester building is no longer the appropriate place to carry that manufacturing into its next cycle.
The timing also separates the decision from the physical closure of every part of the site. Production has stopped, but final rundown, decommissioning and property activity can continue after the last cereal leaves the line.
For employees and suppliers, the decisive change has already occurred: the factory is no longer a functioning cereal-production site. For the wider food-manufacturing sector, Trafford Park is another example of the point at which maintaining a historic plant becomes harder to justify than transferring output to a facility better aligned with modern process engineering.
