Salmonella egg investigation reaches 355 cases

UK Salmonella investigators now report 355 cases in England alone. Imported eggs remain under investigation as three genetically distinct clusters continue to produce infections.

The UK Health Security Agency has raised the confirmed English case total in the largest of three Salmonella Enteritidis clusters under investigation to 355, with imported eggs continuing to form part of the food-chain inquiry.

The latest figures are based on data to 10am on 15 September. Cluster t5.9411 has increased by 33 cases since the previous weekly report and has one associated death, with patient sample dates ranging from August 2025 to 7 September 2026.

A second genetically distinct cluster, t0.24068, has reached 189 confirmed cases in England with no reported deaths. Cluster t5.9765 has increased to 42 confirmed cases and has one associated death.

UKHSA, the Food Standards Agency and other public-health partners are investigating the three groups in parallel because genetic and food-history evidence indicates they may all be associated with imported eggs. No exact common source has yet been identified.

Cases continue to be associated with food eaten at cafés, restaurants and takeaway businesses. Authorities have reported fewer new infections in recent weeks, but say it is too early to determine whether the outbreaks are subsiding.

The principal t5.9411 cluster stood at 322 cases in the previous weekly report, while the other two groups contained 186 and 41 cases. The latest surveillance therefore records continued growth across all three, although the increase remains concentrated in the largest outbreak.

The investigation had already expanded to three clusters by late August, when the corresponding case totals were 259, 177 and 38. The continuing weekly increases extend the same incident rather than establishing a new outbreak.

The clusters remain genetically distinct, which prevents investigators from assuming that a single producer, country or consignment is responsible simply because eggs appear in the exposure histories. Whole genome sequencing allows UKHSA to separate closely related infections into outbreak groups while identifying patterns that warrant parallel investigation.

UKHSA’s latest statistical release records 125 cases from the largest cluster reported during the four weeks to 15 September. Cases have been identified across all nine English regions, giving the investigation a national rather than geographically concentrated profile.

The FSA is carrying out food-chain tracing alongside the public-health investigation. Its September Board papers say work is examining eggs supplied to hospitality and catering businesses, with teams tracing products through the supply chain and engaging with companies and other stakeholders.

No link has been identified with UK-produced eggs or poultry. That distinction limits the value of broad category-level responses and makes supplier, origin and batch information more important as investigators work backwards through commercial supply routes.

Hospitality and foodservice supply chains can complicate that process. Eggs may pass through importers, wholesalers and distributors before reaching numerous independent customers, while the eventual consumer may encounter them as an ingredient in a sauce, dessert, prepared meal or other product rather than as identifiable shell eggs.

Commercial traceability therefore depends on records upstream of the finished meal. Supplier approval, delivery documentation, batch references and production records allow businesses to identify which sites and products received particular ingredients if the investigation narrows to a specific source.

Processing can make that task more demanding. Eggs that are broken, pooled or incorporated into manufactured food lose the visual identifiers available on a retail shell egg, leaving documentation as the connection between the incoming batch and finished output.

The weekly case figures also reflect an unavoidable surveillance delay. Patients have to become ill, seek medical attention, provide samples and have Salmonella confirmed before genomic analysis can link an infection with an outbreak cluster. Reported totals therefore continue to rise after the original exposure may have occurred.

That lag is one reason the reduction in recent cases cannot yet be treated as evidence that the incident is ending. A genuine decline has to persist through successive reporting periods before investigators can separate it from normal variation and reporting delay.

The public-health risk remains classified as low. Existing FSA guidance states that vulnerable groups can eat raw or lightly cooked hen eggs where they carry the British Lion mark or are produced under the Laid in Britain assurance scheme, while eggs outside those schemes should be thoroughly cooked where additional precautions are required.

The unresolved industrial issue is still source attribution. More than 580 confirmed English cases now sit across the three specific clusters, but investigators have not named a single supplier or common consignment responsible for them.

Until food-chain tracing reaches that level of specificity, businesses using imported eggs remain dependent on complete purchasing records, supplier assurance and the ability to identify rapidly where incoming batches have been used. The weekly surveillance totals describe the scale of the incident; traceability will determine whether the investigation can move from association to a defined source.
