Food and drink wholesaler FoodArt UK Limited has been fined more than £18,000 after environmental health officers found products stored in warehouse areas contaminated by cat faeces, urine, and associated bacteria at its premises in Brimsdown, Enfield.
The company pleaded guilty to four food-hygiene offences following inspections carried out by Enfield Council in January and February 2025. The breaches covered failures to keep the premises clean, maintain the warehouse in appropriate repair and condition, and prevent domestic animals from gaining access to areas where foodstuffs were stored.
At the first inspection on 28 January 2025, officers found significant quantities of cat faeces around warehouse aisles used for food storage. The council said contamination was present on floors and packaging, including areas holding drinks marketed towards children and open crates of bottled water, while individual bottles had fallen into affected aisles.
FoodArt accepted a recommendation to close the premises immediately while cleaning and disinfection were carried out. When environmental health officers returned on 17 February, they found further evidence of cat faeces in the warehouse, prompting another closure for cleaning and staff training.
The prosecution later reached Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court, where FoodArt pleaded guilty to four charges on 14 May 2026. The company received a £12,000 fine, together with a victim surcharge and the council’s prosecution costs, taking the overall financial penalty above £18,000.
Animals should not have access to food-storage areas, but the case reaches beyond an obvious housekeeping failure. Warehouse hygiene forms part of the food-safety system even where products arrive sealed, because contamination on exterior packaging can be transferred to hands, handling equipment, retail environments, or the area around a container before consumption.
Packaging provides a physical barrier to the food or drink inside, yet external contamination is not irrelevant. Bottles, trays, cases, closures, and shrink-wrap are handled repeatedly after leaving the warehouse, and some drinks are consumed directly from containers that have moved through several storage and distribution environments.
Enfield Council cited risks associated with organisms including E. coli and Salmonella, as well as toxoplasmosis. The presence of cats also points to weaknesses in premises management extending beyond cleaning alone: access points, building condition, inspection frequency, damaged surfaces, stock discipline, pest control, and management response all influence whether contamination is prevented or allowed to recur.
FoodArt describes itself as a wholesaler supplying off-licences, corner shops, supermarkets, and independent retailers across the UK, with a range spanning hundreds of brands and multiple imported food and beverage categories. Its registered business activity is non-specialised wholesale of food, beverages, and tobacco, placing warehouse condition at the centre of the operation rather than at its margins.
The repeat finding is therefore particularly significant. The first voluntary closure provided an opportunity to clean and disinfect the site, but inspectors reported further contamination when they returned less than three weeks later. Cleaning can remove the immediate evidence; repeated access indicates that the underlying control has not been made effective.
Warehousing is sometimes treated as lower risk than open food processing because products are packaged and there may be little direct exposure. Food law still requires premises to remain clean, maintained, and protected against contamination regardless of whether the building contains processing lines, pallets of finished goods, or both.
Finished-goods warehouses also tend to handle large volumes through relatively few touchpoints, so a localised hygiene problem can affect many cases or pallets before it is noticed. Routine inspection therefore matters even when sealed packs make the immediate product risk appear low.
That expectation extends into supplier assurance. A manufacturer can operate strong hygiene and microbiological controls on the production line and still see finished goods exposed to poor conditions later in the chain. Third-party storage, cross-docking, repacking, and wholesale facilities therefore need standards that match the risk created by the products and activities they handle.
The commercial cost of failure also reaches beyond a fine. Contaminated packaging can trigger stock disposal, cleaning, temporary closure, investigation, customer complaints, damaged retailer confidence, and additional inspection. If the underlying access problem persists, the same controls may need to be rebuilt while the business is already operating under regulatory scrutiny.
FoodArt remains an active company and continues to trade from Lockfield Avenue. The prosecution leaves it with a straightforward operational requirement: prevent animals entering the storage environment, keep the building and food-contact surroundings clean, and demonstrate that corrective action remains effective after inspectors have left.
