IPL Schoeller has introduced SnapPack Square EVO, a rigid thin-wall food-packaging range incorporating 20% food-contact recycled polypropylene. The containers use PureCycle’s PureFive recycled resin and are scheduled to become commercially available during autumn 2026 in the sizes already offered across the existing virgin-polypropylene SnapPack Square range.
The more significant part of the launch is its off-the-shelf format. Food manufacturers seeking recycled-content packaging frequently have to qualify bespoke materials and container specifications, adding development, line trials, sealing validation, and customer approval before the new pack reaches normal production. SnapPack Square EVO is being positioned as a prequalified standard range intended to shorten that process.
IPL Schoeller says the containers retain the product protection, durability, sealing performance, clarity, and stackability expected from its existing format. The square design is intended to make efficient use of storage, transport, and retail space, while the recycled polypropylene reduces the proportion of virgin resin required for each container.
For processors, however, specifying recycled content remains an engineering exercise rather than a purchasing-box exercise. A container has to move consistently through denesting, filling, lidding or sealing, coding, inspection, case packing, palletisation, distribution, and storage without introducing faults that were absent from the previous material specification.
Material consistency matters particularly on fast packaging equipment. Small changes in stiffness, dimensions, surface behaviour, or thermal response can affect how containers separate from a stack, locate beneath a filler, accept a seal, or pass inspection. Food-contact suitability is essential, but it does not by itself demonstrate that a new material will perform identically on every production line.
PureCycle produces PureFive using a dissolution-based recycling process intended to purify recovered polypropylene. IPL Schoeller says the resulting resin gives the EVO range sufficient clarity for food applications while allowing 20% recycled content to be incorporated into the thin-wall format.
The 20% level also gives the launch a regulatory context. IPL Schoeller says the range is compliant with recycled-content requirements in jurisdictions including New Jersey and California, where packaging rules are increasing pressure on brands and packaging suppliers to demonstrate greater use of recovered material. Individual food manufacturers will still have to determine which rules apply to their products, packs, and markets.
Standardisation can reduce part of that compliance burden because manufacturers are not forced to develop a new container geometry simply to change the polymer composition. The EVO range is available in the same sizes as the existing SnapPack Square portfolio, giving customers a more direct route to trialling recycled content against pack formats already familiar to production and supply-chain teams.
That does not eliminate validation. Processors still need to establish whether the container maintains seal integrity, stack strength, visual quality, and dimensional consistency through their own line conditions and distribution network. Shelf-life testing may also be required where packaging performance forms part of the product’s protection system.
The launch follows earlier work between PureCycle and IPL Schoeller on customer-specific food packaging using recycled polypropylene. Moving the material into a standard catalogue range represents a different commercial step because it makes the technology available without requiring every adopter to begin with an individual packaging-development project.
That shift could matter more to adoption than another increase in recycled-content percentage. Food factories are already managing numerous packaging changes around material reduction, recyclability, labelling, extended producer responsibility, and retailer requirements. A standard format that reduces engineering lead time can be easier to accommodate than a technically impressive material that requires a lengthy bespoke programme before it can reach a filling line.
The operational question will become clearer once commercial volumes are available this autumn. A recycled-content container has to survive the same production schedules, warehouse movements, transport conditions, and retail handling as the virgin pack it replaces, while providing enough consistency for machinery operating at industrial speeds.
SnapPack Square EVO therefore arrives at the point where recycled polypropylene is moving from individual demonstrations towards repeatable food-packaging products. If manufacturers can validate the material without extensive line changes, the significance will be less the existence of another recycled container and more the availability of one that can be specified from an established packaging range.
