Livetec opens poultry biosecurity tool to producers

Livetec has made its poultry biosecurity assessment freely available nationwide. The digital tool provides overall and zone-level scores before Defra-funded veterinary reviews.

Livetec has made a single-site version of its electronic Biosecurity Assessment Tool freely available to poultry producers following the introduction of Defra-funded farm reviews.

The reviews form part of the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway and provide eligible poultry keepers in England with veterinary advice tailored to the disease risks and operating conditions at their own sites.

Known as eBAS, Livetec’s digital assessment can be completed before the veterinary visit and produces an overall biosecurity score alongside separate results for defined operating zones. Producers can identify stronger controls and areas where further action may be required.

The UK assessment covers conceptual, structural, and procedural biosecurity, including the site’s location, physical infrastructure, boundaries, access arrangements, hygiene facilities, and daily working practices.

Poultry producers can use the free single-site assessment through the Livestock Protect mobile application without subscribing to the wider Livetec platform. Larger and multi-site businesses can continue using the complete system for central records, monitoring, and contingency planning.

Completed results can be shared with the veterinary professional conducting the funded review, giving both parties a structured starting point. The assessment does not replace the veterinary visit, diagnosis, or site-specific recommendations.

Overall scores provide a useful summary, although the individual controls behind the number determine the actual level of protection. Two farms with similar results may face markedly different exposure because of nearby poultry density, wild-bird activity, water sources, access roads, housing, and production type.

Zone-level scoring prevents a strong external perimeter from concealing weak controls between houses, yards, changing areas, or production zones. Disease can still enter a flock where equipment, footwear, people, or vehicles cross boundaries without effective cleaning and separation.

Farm biosecurity shapes processing continuity

Avian influenza and other poultry diseases can interrupt bird movements, trigger depopulation, restrict catching schedules, and reduce the volumes available to hatcheries, feed businesses, egg packers, and processing plants.

Poultry factories plan around bird numbers, weight ranges, shift patterns, chilling capacity, cutting lines, packaging schedules, and customer orders. A sudden fall in live supply leaves labour and equipment underused, whereas a compressed movement window can create concentrated arrivals and production pressure.

Water quality forms another part of on-farm control, with nanobubble treatment systems being deployed to improve poultry drinking-water management. Water treatment and site biosecurity address different hazards, but both depend on treating the farm as a controlled production system.

Potential disease routes include feed deliveries, litter, drinking water, rodents, wild birds, catching teams, maintenance contractors, shared machinery, staff clothing, and vehicles. Controls must remain effective during weekends, clean-out periods, emergency work, and staff shortages rather than only during formal assessment.

Visitor records, cleaning schedules, mortality data, water results, pest-control reports, vehicle logs, and training documents help establish whether procedures are being followed. Records must correspond with physical conditions, since paperwork cannot compensate for a damaged boundary, unused hygiene station, or contaminated access route.

The veterinary review can use eBAS results to focus on weaknesses involving traffic flow, clean and dirty separation, changing arrangements, wild-bird exclusion, carcass handling, drainage, house access, or the cleaning of shared equipment.

Some improvements will require capital expenditure, while others depend on layout, supervision, training, or clearer responsibilities. Rebuilding a yard or installing a changing facility carries a direct cost, whereas inconsistent use of existing controls may be corrected through management and operational redesign.

Multi-site groups should compare farms without assuming that one standard layout will work everywhere. Older buildings, shared roads, neighbouring livestock, topography, drainage, and watercourses can restrict the practical options available at individual locations.

Repeated digital assessments can show whether corrective work was completed and whether risk changes as buildings, bird numbers, seasonal conditions, or operating practices evolve. Aggregated results may also identify recurring weaknesses across an estate.

Information security requires attention because biosecurity assessments contain sensitive operational details. Access, storage, sharing, and retention arrangements should be agreed before records move beyond the producer and veterinary team.

A score may also be misleading when removed from context. A low result does not establish that infection will occur, while a high result does not remove the need for surveillance, reporting, and rapid action when disease is suspected.

The free version lowers the cost of preparing for a funded review and gives the veterinary visit a more detailed evidence base. Its effectiveness will be measured through completed corrective actions and sustained working practices rather than the number of assessments submitted.
