Siegwerk expands North American packaging ink capacity

Siegwerk is expanding regional ink production and supporting warehouse capacity. Projects in Iowa and North Carolina target flexible packaging, digital printing, operating resilience, and lower-carbon infrastructure.

Siegwerk is expanding packaging ink production, warehousing, and digital printing capability across the United States as it strengthens regional supply for flexible and narrow-web packaging customers.

The programme covers the company’s sites in Des Moines, Iowa, and Morganton, North Carolina. Siegwerk has not disclosed the capital value or the additional production tonnage, but the projects include new milling, blending, white ink, colour, inkjet, warehouse, solar, facility, and IT capacity.

At Des Moines, modernised milling and blending equipment will be joined by new white and colour production systems designed for inline batch manufacture. Siegwerk says the changes will increase operating flexibility and improve its ability to respond to changing customer volumes and specifications.

The company also broke ground in early June on a warehouse intended primarily to support solvent-based operations serving flexible packaging. The building will add storage capacity and leave room for later expansion, although its area and completion date have not been disclosed.

Ink supply sits inside packaging performance

Printing ink represents a small proportion of a food pack by weight, but it carries brand appearance, legal information, traceability, barcodes, preparation instructions, and product differentiation. It must run at commercial press speeds while remaining compatible with films, papers, boards, coatings, adhesives, and laminating processes.

Flexible packaging places demanding conditions on that system. Films can stretch, shrink, slip, and respond differently to surface treatment, while reverse printing, lamination, freezing, retort, heat sealing, and high-speed filling expose the finished structure to mechanical and thermal stress.

Colour consistency is therefore only one requirement. Adhesion, resistance, drying, solvent retention, migration control, and downstream converting performance must remain within specification, particularly where the printed surface sits close to food or forms part of a laminated structure.

New milling and blending equipment can shorten lead times and broaden the range produced locally, but additional speed increases dependence on recipe control, instrumentation, maintenance, and raw-material data. Inline batch production magnifies errors as efficiently as it improves throughput when a formulation, pigment, or equipment setting is wrong.

White inks bring their own production burden because high pigment loadings can be difficult to disperse, transfer, and clean. Colour systems require equally disciplined control if converters are to reproduce approved shades across different presses, substrates, and production runs without repeated adjustment.

The Des Moines warehouse is also an operating asset rather than spare floor space. Solvent-based ink storage requires ventilation, segregation, spill control, fire protection, safe internal movement, and regulatory compliance, while inventory policy must balance availability against the cost and risk of carrying excessive material.

Digital capability broadens in Morganton

At Morganton, Siegwerk is adding water-based and UV-based inkjet production, with completion scheduled during 2026. New milling and blending equipment will also support its narrow-web portfolio, while solar panels financed through the company’s Green Fund will supply part of the site’s electricity and contribute power to the local grid.

Inkjet production extends the programme beyond conventional packaging inks. Digital printing is gaining ground in shorter runs, versioned packs, variable information, and late-stage customisation, where converters want to reduce plates, setup time, and start-up waste.

The fluids create a different manufacturing challenge. Filtration, particle size, viscosity, surface tension, cleanliness, and printhead compatibility become critical because small deviations can affect jetting or damage equipment. Food-packaging customers still require colour, durability, compliant chemistry, and reliable supply, but the production controls differ from larger-volume conventional ink systems.

Narrow-web investment supports labels and smaller packaging formats, where converters often manage many jobs, substrates, colours, and customer specifications. That variety increases the value of regional production and technical support because a failed or delayed batch can interrupt several downstream orders rather than one long campaign.

Food manufacturers may not buy the ink directly, yet they carry the consequences when a converter cannot obtain it. Packaging shortages, colour deviations, rub failure, migration concerns, or interference with sealing can delay product launches and stop filling lines.

Recent development of recyclable flexible food packaging has also shown why inks, coatings, adhesives, barriers, and substrates have to work as one structure. A material may be technically recyclable, but incompatible decoration can weaken its performance or end-of-life route.

Siegwerk’s projects add capacity without disclosing how many tonnes or customer programmes they will support. The clearest milestone is completion of Morganton’s inkjet capability during 2026; Des Moines still lacks a public warehouse completion date.

The programme will be judged through ordinary operating measures: consistent batches, dependable stock, shorter response times, and fewer packaging interruptions. The assets are useful only when converters can translate them into reliable printed packs at line speed.
