WK Kellogg Co has brought forward its deadline for removing artificial colours from cereal production, with revised recipes due to enter manufacturing later in 2026 and begin shipping to retailers before year-end.
The programme covers the company’s North American portfolio, including Froot Loops and Apple Jacks. Synthetic colour systems will be replaced with colours derived from fruit and vegetable juices and other plant-based ingredients, one year ahead of the original schedule.
The company is also removing the preservative BHT from the small amount of cereal packaging that still contains it. WK Kellogg has described a significant investment in manufacturing facilities to support the transition, but has not disclosed the value, affected plants, or individual product conversion dates.
Doug VanDeVelde, chief growth officer at WK Kellogg Co, said the business had “identified natural solutions for every color”. The American spelling is retained in the quotation, while the wider manufacturing programme will have to reproduce the established appearance of several multi-coloured products.
Colour conversion reaches beyond formulation
Replacing a synthetic colour is rarely a direct substitution. Plant-derived systems can respond differently to heat, pH, light, oxygen, moisture, storage time, and interactions with flavours, vitamins, minerals, and cereal ingredients, so a laboratory match must still survive cooking, forming, drying, coating, packing, and distribution.
That turns the portfolio conversion into a manufacturing programme rather than a purchasing decision. Dosing equipment may require new settings, liquids and powders can behave differently during storage and transfer, and higher addition rates may alter recipe balance, cleaning requirements, or line sequence.
Froot Loops and Apple Jacks create a particular control challenge because colour forms part of their recognised identity. Consumers may accept a revised ingredient declaration while still rejecting cereal that looks dull, inconsistent, or unfamiliar, making shade control and batch-to-batch repeatability central to the transfer.
Multi-coloured products also require the factory to manage several formulations without allowing carryover or creating excessive downtime. Supplier specifications, intake checks, recipe records, finished product tolerances, and quality-release procedures must all be updated before the new systems can move into routine production.
WK Kellogg has already reformulated cereals supplied to schools and stopped launching new products containing artificial colours in January. Those steps reduce the remaining conversion pool and provide some operating experience, but extending the work across the full portfolio still requires coordinated raw material changeovers, inventory run-down, artwork control, and retailer communication.
Packaging changes create a parallel workstream
BHT removal applies to the remaining affected cereal packaging rather than being described as a cereal-formulation change. Alternative materials must be qualified for product protection, machinability, sealing, storage, and distribution, with line trials confirming that the revised structure runs reliably at commercial speed.
The packaging and recipe programmes must also be synchronised. If old and new materials overlap during transition, coding and traceability must identify which recipe and pack specification were used, while artwork and customer records need to prevent visually similar stock from being confused.
Natural-colour suppliers are expanding capacity ahead of wider reformulation demand. Recent investment in natural-colour production in St Louis added specialised processing capability, reflecting the volumes, shade consistency, and technical support required when large brands move beyond pilot quantities.
Plant-derived colours bring their own supply considerations. Crop origin, concentration, extraction method, and seasonal variation can affect performance, so WK Kellogg may need more than one approved source or contingency route for colours that are critical to several products.
The timetable leaves only a few months for production transfer, retail shipment, and packaging conversion. Validation must cover taste, appearance, texture, throughput, cleaning time, finished product life, and pack performance without allowing the accelerated deadline to replace technical evidence.
The company is making the changes alongside work on whole grains, fibre, sugar, sodium, vitamins, minerals, and its SPOONS on-pack nutrition guide. Simultaneous portfolio adjustments can improve the offer, but they also compete for technical resources and can make it harder to isolate the cause of a process or shelf-life shift.
WK Kellogg has set a clear end point for the programme. Its industrial result will be measured by whether every affected recipe and package moves through factories, warehouses, and retailers without creating the quality variation or service disruption that the original materials helped control. A conversion that meets the calendar but weakens line efficiency or shelf life would merely move cost elsewhere in the system.
