Salmonella egg investigation expands to three clusters

UK investigators have widened their Salmonella inquiry around imported eggs. Three genetically distinct clusters are now being investigated in parallel as case numbers increase and authorities trace possible links through foodservice supply routes.

The UK Health Security Agency has widened its investigation into Salmonella Enteritidis potentially associated with imported eggs after increases were identified across three genetically distinct clusters. The largest cluster, designated t5.9411, has reached 259 confirmed cases, while two additional clusters are being examined in parallel because epidemiological and food-exposure evidence points towards a possible shared association with imported eggs.

The latest figures represent a material development from the position reported a week earlier, when the principal cluster stood at 207 cases. As of 25 August, the t5.9411 outbreak included 259 confirmed infections, with specimen dates running from August 2025 to August 2026. One death is associated with the cluster, although association does not establish that Salmonella was the cause of death.

A second cluster, t0.24068, contains 177 confirmed cases, while the third, t5.9765, contains 38. One death is associated with the latter cluster. UKHSA is keeping the groups microbiologically distinct rather than presenting them as a single outbreak, but information gathered through case interviews and food investigations has provided enough overlap for imported eggs to remain under examination across all three.

Meals eaten outside the home feature prominently in the exposure information collected so far, including food consumed at cafés, restaurants, and takeaway businesses. Authorities have not publicly identified an exporting country, producer, importer, wholesaler, or individual food business as the source, and the investigation remains open.

That distinction is important for operators managing egg supply. An epidemiological association can guide investigators towards a product category, but tracing the source requires commercial records capable of linking batches through importers, wholesalers, caterers, and individual premises. Shell eggs and egg products can pass through several businesses before reaching the consumer, particularly in foodservice.

Traceability becomes the operational test

UKHSA is working with the Food Standards Agency and local authority environmental health teams, combining public-health surveillance with food-chain investigation. Whole genome sequencing can show that human infections are closely related, but it cannot establish how the product moved commercially. Supplier records, invoices, batch data, menus, delivery records, and case histories have to be assembled alongside the microbiology.

The three-cluster structure makes that work more complicated. Investigators have to establish whether apparently similar exposures came through a common commercial route or whether separate contamination events happened to involve the same broad ingredient. Until that distinction is resolved, operators should not infer that all imported eggs are implicated or that one part of the supply chain has been identified as responsible.

The principal t5.9411 strain also has a wider European footprint. Surveillance has recorded cases in several countries, including the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, and Germany, with the UK accounting for the largest proportion identified in the available data. Cross-border distribution increases the number of potential commercial routes that investigators may have to examine.

For manufacturers and caterers, the practical controls are already established. Approved-supplier procedures need to identify who supplied an egg product and under what specification, while receiving and storage records should allow individual deliveries to be linked to subsequent use. Where eggs are incorporated into prepared foods, production or kitchen records become part of the traceability chain.

Cooking remains another control, particularly for vulnerable consumers. UKHSA continues to advise people at greater risk from foodborne illness to choose British Lion or Laid in Britain eggs when eating them raw or lightly cooked. Where the production scheme is unknown, the advice is to eat eggs thoroughly cooked.

That consumer guidance does not replace factory and foodservice hygiene. Raw-ingredient segregation, hand hygiene, cleaning, temperature control, avoidance of cross-contamination, and suitable cooking processes remain relevant whether eggs are sourced domestically or imported. The speed at which records can be retrieved also determines how quickly affected stock can be identified if investigators eventually establish a source.

Recent growth in the case numbers means the investigation is still developing rather than winding down. UKHSA’s move to report the clusters together gives public-health teams a broader view of potentially connected egg exposures, but it also preserves the genetic distinctions needed to avoid drawing conclusions that the evidence does not yet support.

The next significant development will be identification of a common supplier or other point in the commercial chain, if one exists. Until then, imported eggs remain an investigative hypothesis supported by epidemiological and food information, while the source of the outbreaks remains unconfirmed.
