BW Converting extends Pour & Lok food applications

BW Converting expands Pour & Lok across resealable food packaging. The pre-applied closure can run through conventional form-fill-seal equipment and targets pourable products including cereals, snacks, nuts, seeds, and selected frozen foods.

BW Converting is extending the potential applications for its Hudson-Sharp Pour & Lok closure system, offering flexible-packaging converters a pre-applied resealable pouring format that can be processed on conventional form-fill-seal equipment.

The company’s immediate commercial focus is pet food, but it also identifies cereal, snacks, nuts, seeds, and selected frozen foods among the pourable products that could use the same closure arrangement. For food manufacturers, the relevant development is less the shape of the opening than where the extra packaging operation takes place.

Pour & Lok applies a press-to-close closure to the film before the roll reaches the filling plant. The feature sits within the side gusset and unfolds into a pouring opening when the consumer opens the package, allowing part of the product to be dispensed before the pack is closed again.

That shifts closure application upstream to the converter rather than requiring a zipper-installation system beside each filling machine. BW Converting says customers can therefore introduce the feature without major equipment changes or seal-bar modifications on the downstream vertical form-fill-seal line.

The system forms part of Hudson-Sharp’s wider Inno-Lok platform, which is designed to add closures and gussets during roll-stock production. BW Converting says Inno-Lok films can run comparably to conventional non-closure films on standard form-fill-seal equipment and do not require additional closure-application machinery at the filler.

That does not mean the line can ignore the closure completely. Hudson-Sharp specifies around 3–4mm clearance between the forming collar and fill tube to allow the closure to pass through, demonstrating that machine compatibility still has to be checked against the installed forming set.

Web tracking, tension, film thickness, the position of the gusset, and sealing conditions can also affect performance once an additional structure is incorporated into a roll. A closure that is straightforward on a finished pack can become a line-speed problem if it catches around the forming tube or alters the web sufficiently to reduce sealing consistency.

Moving application to the converter changes where those risks are managed. Seal integrity, closure position, and perforation quality have to remain consistent across an entire roll because a converting fault can affect a much larger batch of material than an isolated defective finished package.

The attraction for food plants is reduced additional hardware around the packing line. Introducing an in-line zipper applicator can add controls, maintenance, set-up, spare parts, and another process capable of restricting throughput. Pre-applied film removes some of that equipment while transferring complexity into the purchased packaging material.

That trade-off is likely to be more attractive where a manufacturer operates several filling lines or wants to trial resealability without installing dedicated hardware on each one. The economics still depend on the premium paid for converted roll stock, waste levels, line speed, and whether the feature produces enough consumer or product benefit to justify its cost.

Cereal, nuts, seeds, and snacks are plausible applications because larger packs are frequently opened repeatedly and contain free-flowing products that can be poured. A smaller gusseted opening may provide more controlled dispensing than opening the full top seam of the package.

Selected frozen foods could present a similar use case where only part of a bag is removed at each occasion, although low-temperature handling places its own requirements on film stiffness, closure operation, sealing, and repeated opening.

Resealability also needs to be distinguished from the barrier provided by an unopened factory seal. Once the consumer first opens the package, a press-to-close feature is intended to manage repeated access; it does not necessarily recreate the original moisture, oxygen, or gas barrier achieved during manufacture.

Food manufacturers therefore still need opened-pack shelf-life work where product stability depends on limiting moisture pickup or oxidation. A convenient closure is useful only if the product remains acceptable through the realistic period between first opening and final use.

The system’s pet-food emphasis creates a further editorial caveat for food processing. Pour & Lok is not being launched primarily for human-food manufacturing, and BW Converting’s 27 August announcement sits outside this run’s normal sourcing allowance.

It remains relevant because the same converting technology is being positioned directly for cereals, snacks, nuts, seeds, and frozen foods, where the machinery question is identical: can a converter add the function without forcing the food manufacturer to rebuild its installed filling system?

For those applications, the decisive measure will be commercial line performance rather than the consumer demonstration. Stable film tracking, seal integrity, changeover time, waste, and throughput will determine whether shifting the closure upstream genuinely removes complexity or simply changes who has to manage it.
