Arla Protein Pudding recall spreads across international markets

Arla has issued protein pudding recalls across several international markets. British, Australian and New Zealand authorities have identified different affected batches, while Arla has separately confirmed Danish production dates for specified products recalled in Denmark.

IN Brief:

  • The UK FSA recalled specified Chocolate, Salted Caramel and Vanilla Cookie pudding dates on 23 October.
  • Australia and New Zealand issued separate alerts on 24 October with different affected product dates and distribution details.
  • Arla says its Danish recalled batches were manufactured at Esbjerg Dairy between 12 June and 14 July 2026; the cause of the possible contamination remains unidentified.

Arla Protein Pudding recalls have prompted food safety alerts in Britain, Australia and New Zealand following warnings that specified batches may contain glass fragments. Arla has also issued a recall in Denmark. Notices published on 23 and 24 October cover different flavours and best-before dates, making the details printed on individual packs essential for identifying affected products.

The UK Food Standards Agency issued product recall information notice FSA-PRIN-51-2026 on 23 October. It covers 200g Arla Protein Pudding in Chocolate, Salted Caramel and Vanilla Cookie flavours. The agency said the affected products may contain glass and should not be eaten. Retailers selling the recalled products are to display notices explaining how customers can return them for a refund.

For the Chocolate flavour in Britain, the affected best-before dates are 11, 18 and 20 January 2027 and 6 February 2027. Salted Caramel is affected with dates of 21, 23 and 31 January and 2 February 2027. The Vanilla Cookie recall applies to products dated 25 January 2027. These are specified date codes, not a recall of every pack carrying those flavour names.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand published an Australian notice on 24 October for Arla Protein Salted Caramel Flavour Pudding 200g with a best-before date of 28 April 2027 and Chocolate Flavour Pudding 200g dated 9 May 2027. The distributor identified in the recall is Arla Foods Mayer Australia. The Salted Caramel product was sold through Costco in New South Wales, while the Chocolate product was available at Coles in New South Wales and Queensland and at specified independent retailers in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

New Zealand Food Safety separately supported a recall by importer Hutchinsons Ltd of Arla Protein Pudding Vanilla Cookie 200g with a best-before date of 26 April 2027. The authority said the product had been sold through Woolworths, Fresh Choice and Foodstuffs stores nationwide, and that it had been imported from Denmark. New Zealand officials said they had received no notifications of injuries associated with the recalled product as of the notice.

Arla’s Danish recall identifies an actual manufacturing location for some affected products. The company said the specified Chocolate and Caramel pudding batches recalled in Denmark were produced at Esbjerg Dairy, production code M224, between 12 June and 14 July 2026. They were sold in Denmark, border shops, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. These are the particulars of the Danish recall; they should not be applied automatically to every product date notified in other countries. Arla has not publicly identified the cause of the possible contamination or a defective processing component in the statements reviewed.

Physical contamination controls are particularly important for ready-to-eat dairy products, where consumers ordinarily open the pack and eat the contents without a further manufacturing or preparation step that might reveal foreign material. Glass can present a direct injury risk, and the relevant authorities have therefore advised consumers not to consume the affected products. Customers should follow the specific recall notice for the country in which the product was purchased, rather than relying on a different market’s list of dates.

For manufacturers and retailers, the notices illustrate the importance of precise traceability when related products are distributed internationally. An effective withdrawal or recall must distinguish product descriptions, pack sizes, date marks, markets and distribution channels. Those controls can prevent a warning from being too narrow while also avoiding confusion for consumers holding unaffected stock.

Arla has been instructed through the UK notice to recall the specified batches, with point-of-sale notices in relevant shops. Australian authorities advised affected consumers to return products for a refund, while New Zealand Food Safety also advised disposal if return was not possible. The official notices remain the authoritative source for scope and consumer advice as any further investigation continues.

The differing national notices make batch traceability particularly important. Arla’s Danish list includes some dates also notified in Britain, but that overlap alone does not establish that every recalled date in Australia and New Zealand belongs to the same production run. Product and distribution records, rather than brand names alone, are needed to establish the extent of the affected supply chain. Consumers should follow the notice issued for their purchase market.

Although Esbjerg Dairy has been identified for the Danish lots, neither Arla nor the regulators has identified a glass packaging component, ingredient, production vessel or filling line as the source of the potential hazard. The available notices do not explain whether the concern originated in an inspection, a consumer complaint or another detection method. A confirmed manufacturing site should not be mistaken for a confirmed root cause.
