Amcor and Chinese pet-food brand Ge Wu An have commercially launched the Li Kou wet pet-food cup, introducing an inverted polypropylene format that uses top lidding and a separate bottom seal to release the complete portion into a bowl.
The pack combines a polypropylene cup body, top lidding film and bottom seal film. Amcor describes the product as the first commercial deployment of an inverted-cup packaging format in China, following more than a year of development between the two companies through its Catalyst innovation platform.
The bottom seal provides the main functional difference from a conventional cup. The user opens the pack, inverts it over the bowl, removes the lower seal and lifts the container away, allowing the formed wet food to leave the pack without scraping it from the walls.
That serving method requires more than a change in opening instructions. The cup geometry, surface interaction with the food and both sealing interfaces have to work together closely enough for the product to remain secure through production and distribution but release predictably when opened.
Wet pet food creates demanding packaging conditions because it contains high levels of moisture and requires long-term protection against contamination and environmental exposure. Depending on the product and process, the pack may also need to withstand heat treatment while maintaining its dimensions and seal integrity.
Amcor has not disclosed the complete barrier structure, thermal process or shelf-life specification used for Li Kou. The format should therefore be treated as a product-specific commercial development rather than as a direct substitute for every metal can or conventional retort container.
The company says the cup-and-film construction uses less material per unit and weighs less during transport than a traditional aluminium can. It has not published quantified pack weights or a comparative lifecycle assessment, so those claims establish the direction of the design rather than a measured environmental advantage across the complete supply chain.
The same qualification applies to recyclability. A polypropylene cup body can be compatible with established PP recycling streams, but the complete pack also contains two film components, inks and sealing layers whose composition affects the end-of-life route. Collection and sorting infrastructure in China will ultimately determine how much material is recovered.
Ge Wu An’s wet-food range includes mousse-style products, where adhesion to a rigid container can leave part of the portion behind after opening. The inverted format is intended to address that issue while avoiding pull rings and sharp metal edges associated with conventional cans.
Consistent release places tight demands on filling and sealing. Product on a sealing surface, variation in fill weight, differences in temperature or incorrect dwell time could affect the integrity or opening behaviour of the pack. The bottom seal has to be secure enough for logistics but peel predictably when the consumer opens the product.
Those variables become harder to control as throughput rises. Laboratory prototypes can be inspected individually, whereas commercial production depends on process windows that remain stable across long runs. Seal inspection, dimensional consistency and rejection controls will therefore determine whether the format performs as reliably on the line as it does in demonstrations.
The development period lasted more than a year, indicating that the two companies worked through more than a cosmetic redesign. A new opening method can affect tooling, filling-line interfaces, sealing equipment, quality checks and secondary packing before a product reaches commercial scale.
The launch follows other polypropylene food-packaging work within Amcor. The company recently expanded its UniPak range with the Luma platform for dairy, chilled, ambient-filled and dry-food applications. Li Kou is a separate development, but both projects use polypropylene in formats intended to reduce material while retaining commercial filling and handling performance.
The inverted pack also illustrates how consumer convenience can create engineering requirements upstream. A cleaner serving process depends on the manufacturing system delivering the same relationship between product, cup and seal every time. An inconsistent release would undermine the central reason for adopting the new format.
Commercialisation in China now gives Amcor and Ge Wu An the chance to evaluate that performance at production volume. Useful operating data would include filling speed, seal rejection rates, pack weights, shelf-life results and consumer opening performance across different storage and distribution conditions.
Expansion into additional products would also show how broadly the format can be applied. Wet-food formulations differ substantially in fat content, viscosity, particle size and texture, all of which can change release from a container. A mousse that leaves the cup cleanly may behave differently from products containing chunks, sauces or denser formulations.
Li Kou has moved beyond development into a commercial product, but the inverted-cup concept still has to demonstrate its operating range. Repeated production performance, seal integrity and product release will determine whether the design remains a distinctive format for one brand or becomes a wider option for wet pet-food packaging.
